The Mondrian Initiative presents artist Sophia Al-Maria's new film. 'Sing, fight, cry, pray, laugh, work and admire' (2024) marks the conclusion of Al-Maria's residency, which took place from March to November 2023 at Piet Mondrian's historic studios in Laren, The Netherlands. With contributions by: Tia Campbell, Joshua Fay, Sin Wai Kin, Shuang Li, Ruoru Mou, Lydia Ourahmane, Martine Syms, Ryan Trecartin and Joshua Woolford.
In 2023, Sophia Al-Maria was the first recipient of The Mondrian Prize, an annual award presented by The Mondrian Initiative and the Dooyewaard Foundation to an internationally recognized art professional. The invites the recipient to undertake a research project in the Laren colony that includes the historic studio of Piet Mondrian (1872-1944). The award recipient had the opportunity to invite fellow artists to collaborate on this research. Just as Piet Mondrian did in this area in 1917 with Bart van der Leck and Theo van Doesburg, laying the foundation for De Stijl movement, one of the most influential and all-encompassing movements of the 20th century.
